Fashion often plays a role when people buy shoes, but footwear’s main role is to safeguard your feet, especially if you’re a runner! Today, Dr. Joel Segalman and Dr. Stephen Lazaroff at Performance Foot & Ankle Specialists, LLC are sharing some tips to protect your feet with the proper shoes, socks and orthotics

There are some things you need to know when you begin a running program if you want to keep your feet healthy and safe. And one of the most important is to make sure you are wearing proper footwear. The following tips will help ensure that your feet are protected.

When and where to buy: When buying any type of footwear, one of the first considerations is the time of day when you will shop for running shoes. It’s best to shop in the late afternoon or early evening because feet tend to swell throughout the day. A pair that fits in the morning could be tight if you go for an evening run.

Shop at a store that specializes in athletic and running footwear. The employees at these specialty stores are more knowledgeable and can offer advice if you have questions.

Proper fit and function: Running shoes need to offer plenty of cushioning while being structurally supportive and well-constructed. Solid heel counters and arch support are also important considerations to reduce your risk of plantar fasciitis and other overuse injuries. Your heel needs to be firmly-cradled, your toes require a little room on the sides, and there should be about a space about the size of a thumb between your longest toe and the front of the shoe.

Don’t forget the socks: Socks tend to be a bit undervalued but serve an important function for those who run on trails, running tracks or streets. They can keep feet from sliding around within shoes, help prevent blisters, and wick moisture away to keep feet cool and reduce the risk of fungal growth

Custom orthotics: One more possible tool for protecting your feet when you run is a pair of custom orthotics. They are great for people who have flat feet or high arches. The good news about these issues is that we can help by prescribing orthotics
