There can be long-term costs to not treating foot conditions in children such as flatfoot, clubfoot, bunions or tarsal injuries. Symptoms include pain, arthritis or muscle fatigue. Flatfoot occurs when the foot does not have an arch and can be painful. They should be treated with orthotics so that complications don’t develop in adulthood due to flat feet. Clubfoot actually arises at birth. It can be identified with an ultrasound before a baby is born. Tarsal coalitions typically occur in older children and develop when a joint is bonded to another bone and produces a stiff and painful foot.
