A Neuroma is a deviation in a nerve due to damage caused by severe trauma or a deformity. They usually occur in the ball of the foot because the nerve can get pinched or swollen due to unusual moments that may happen suddenly or repeatedly over time. If proper care to counteract this condition is not taken timely, the afflicted nerve can become permanently injured with no recourse for treatment. When this occurs, surgery will be required to remove the nerve to reduce severe pain. Indicative factors that suggest you may be suffering from neuromas include shooting pain in the foot, leading to numbness, extreme burning and eventually pain that travels to the toes. 

Treatment includes: 

• Shock through electricity
• Wearing comfortable foot wear 
• Utilizing anti-inflammatories to prevent inflammation
• Use of padding to prevent further damage to the inflamed nerve,
• Orthotics to redistribute pressures away from the ball of the foot or surgery

Surgical removal would involve an incision on the top of the foot to access the neuroma. Recovery times can take up to six weeks and these types of procedures are usually successful. However, complications can always occur from any surgery and may include an infection, severe inflammation or continued pain. If during recovery, an individual exerts too much pressure on the recovering nerve, severe swelling may cause excessive bleeding.
