Neuromas Can Act Up

What is A Neuroma?

A neuroma is an inflamed nerve that happens at the base of the toes or on the bottom of the foot. It develops when a nerve is repeatedly pinched and symptoms include numbness, burning, the feeling of a bulge between the toes, and cramping in toes during movement.

How Do I Know If I Have a Neuroma?

To determine if the foot is suffering from this particular condition, ultrasound can be used to detect soft tissue complications. MRI’s are more innovative and can also be used to detect the presence of neuromas. Factors that increase the chances of acquiring neuromas are flat feet, shoes with high heels or those that are narrow. Immediate treatment is recommended to avoid complications.

Treatments for Neuromas

• Use padding or shoe inserts to support the arch and provide space in between toes thereby reducing the pressure that may have been placed on the pinched nerve.

• Use orthotics in your shoes to redistribute pressure placed on the foot to optimize support in areas that need it the most.

• Physical therapy that includes stretching of the toes.

• Wear shoes with wide toe boxes to allow toes to move freely.

• If the methods discussed above are not successful, surgery may be necessary to remove the neuroma or reduce pressure in the area afflicted.
