Neuromas are a congealing of the nerve that happens between the joints of the toes and causes pain at the ball of the foot when standing for long periods of time. This condition can also cause numbness in the toes, sudden pain or a burning pain that expands through the foot. Causes for neuromas can be foot injuries, severe sprains, bunions that hamper mobility, hereditary problems, poorly fitting shoes such as high-heeled shoes with narrow toe boxes, arthritis or disturbances on a consistent basis from high intensity activities. Pain from this condition gets worse when not treated timely. Other methods such as medication, ultrasound, special shoes or orthotics can be helpful. Padding and massaging the ball of the foot may also help to improve pain caused by this condition. It’s important to remember that massages are most effective in the evening. Ice packs are also useful in reducing inflammation. The best form of relief for those experiencing this pain is to massage the ball of the foot. Hot water, followed by rubbing the foot is also helpful in defeating symptoms.

When the above methods are not successful in treating this condition, surgery will be required to remove the enlarged nerve, thereby eliminating the neuroma and its pain. This can however be a cause for concern as potential complications resulting from unintended nerve damage may result from surgery. Diabetics should particularly be alerted to this result as they can have symptoms that intensify from nerve complications.

Nerve issues must be treated with care as they can have lasting consequences. Failure to timely treat this condition can lead to many issues in the foot due to the enlarged nerve. Please contact us if you have the above described symptoms so that we can determine the extent of your neuroma and provide the necessary treatment to alleviate your pain.
