Heel Spurs are usually on the heel or sole of the foot. This condition can happen over time or through genetic disorders. It can cause severe pain that is long-lasting and produce swelling of the of tendons or fascia in the location of the condition. Those that form on the sole can cause plantar fasciitis. If this condition affects the heel, Achilles tendinitis can follow soon thereafter. This condition can be seen when pointed bony extensions form on the heel.

Treatment for heel spurs involves targeted exercises that incorporate stretching of the plantar fascia. The use of custom orthotics is great for providing arch support. Losing weight can help to reduce the amount of pressure placed on the heel when participating in a variety of activities. Properly softened shoes can help to avoid stresses placed on the heel and elevating it will help to alleviate painful inflammation.

Surgery may be elected for if this condition produces constant swelling that does not subside with the methods referenced above. Surgical procedures will act to remove the heel spur or release the plantar fascia muscle, depending on the source of pain and location of the spur. It’s important to note that surgery not only decreases pain, but also enhances mobility for the entire foot.
