Blisters are Not a Cozy Situation
Blisters are cause for concern since they can produce pain and result in infection. They form on the feet and fill with fluid as an attempt by the body to prevent the skin below them from becoming damaged.

Blisters are cause for concern since they can produce pain and result in infection. They form on the feet and fill with fluid as an attempt by the body to prevent the skin below them from becoming damaged. Factors that increase the likelihood of this condition occurring are vast amounts of pressure applied to the foot, swelling or other infections. Symptoms that occur with this condition are watery bumps on the foot and increased amounts of sensitivity on specific areas of the skin.

Treatment for this condition includes:

  • Prevention is paramount with this condition and includes wearing moisture wicking socks, using cushioning, orthotics and insoles to prevent abnormal pressure on the skin, medicated powders and lubricants to create a smooth surface to counteract friction.
  • Dressing the blister with appropriate bandaging with an absorbent center. This will be important if the blister pops so that the area stays clean and resistant to further infection.
    • The bandaging should, therefore, be applied loosely so that it does not stick to the skin of the blister and will act to deter bacteria from entering the blister and causing infection.
  • Checking the blister routinely for tearing.
  • Being careful not to have anything stick to the blister when covering it so that the top surface layer does not rip off when removing the bandaging.
  • Being sure to change dressings frequently so that infections do not develop.

This condition can cause significant pain and reduction in mobility when infected. It is therefore in your best interest to maintain appropriate prevention and seek treatment if your feet are exposed to high amounts of pressure.
